TOMRA Recycling has launched an innovative AI-based solution to improve the purity of wrought aluminum scrap. This development marks the first application of GAINnext™, TOMRA’s deep learning-based sorting technology, in the metals industry. By integrating GAINnext™ with TOMRA’s X-TRACT™ system, recyclers can achieve exceptionally high-purity wrought aluminum fractions, essential for producing high-quality alloys used in various applications.
GAINnext™ utilizes artificial neural networks to process and classify materials based on shape, size, and dimension. Equipped with high-resolution RGB cameras, it analyzes tens of thousands of images per millisecond, enabling rapid and accurate sorting. This deep learning approach allows for the precise removal of low-alloy cast aluminum from wrought fractions, enhancing the overall quality of the recycled material.
TOMRA’s X-TRACT™ employs X-ray Transmission (XRT) technology to separate aluminum from heavy metals based on atomic density. When combined with GAINnext™, the system effectively refines the aluminum fraction by removing high-alloy cast and high-density wrought aluminum, resulting in a high-quality product that commands premium market prices.
The integration of GAINnext™ into aluminum recycling processes represents a significant advancement in the industry’s ability to produce high-purity materials. This innovation not only meets the growing demand for sustainable and high-quality aluminum but also contributes to the circular economy by enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of recycling operations.
