UNIPORT6 future-proof again with control system retrofit

One of Unisign’s customers has been operating two Unisign machines — a UNIVERS5 and a UNIPORT6 — both of which were delivered in 1999 and are used on a daily basis. Since last year, the UNIPORT6 has presented a suboptimal situation for the customer.

The original screen of the UNIPORT6 had stopped working, requiring operators to rely on an externally connected monitor to run the machine. Although this workaround allowed continued operation, it fell short in terms of user-friendliness and reliability—especially considering that the control system was 25 years old and some components were no longer available.

Solution

Unisign was requested to carry out a retrofit of the control system for the UNIPORT6. Following thorough preparation, this project was successfully executed by Unisign Services in early 2025.

The retrofit included the following key tasks:

  • Control panel replacement: Installation of a new panel equipped with a larger, more user-friendly screen.
  • NCU replacement: Upgrade of the outdated Numerical Control Unit (NCU) to a modern version.
  • Software upgrade: Complete upgrade of the control system software to meet current standards.
The implementation took place in early March. The machine was out of operation for only one week and is now running to the full satisfaction of the customer.

Benefits

  • Future-proofing: Replacing obsolete and hard-to-source components ensures long-term reliability and machine availability, significantly reducing the risk of unplanned downtime.
  • Modern network connectivity: The former serial port has been replaced with a fast, secure network connection, enabling more efficient data handling.
  • Program compatibility: Existing machining programs remain compatible with the new control system.
  • Remote diagnostics: Unisign can now access the control system remotely, allowing for quick troubleshooting and minimizing downtime.
  • Advanced tool management: The new control system provides access to Siemens’ tool management functions.
  • Larger screen: A clearer, more comfortable interface enhances usability for operators.
  • Renewed keyboard: Improved ergonomics and ease of use for operators.
