The Starrag S1250 HD 5-axis machining center, equipped with hydrostatic guides, achieved a metal removal rate of 1,516 cm³/min during performance tests at the Rorschacherberg plant. This result represents a world record in titanium machining, highlighting the machine’s exceptional rigidity, damping, and precision.

From Prototype to Series Production

Even the prototype S1250 HD demonstrated up to three times the material removal rate of the previous STC 1250 model with roller bearings. Improved damping and dynamic performance ensured excellent surface quality and precision, while series production modifications further increased removal rates and reduced tool wear.

Enhanced Machine Structure and Rotary Table

The S1250 HD features a reinforced machine bed and column for higher rigidity, a larger contact surface on the hydrostatics, and a gearbox rotary table delivering 25,000 Nm torque and 32,000 Nm clamping torque. These enhancements meet the demanding requirements of titanium structural components.

Advanced Milling Head and Spindle Features

A compact swivel milling head now supports a stronger A-axis with 12,000 Nm torque and 20,000 Nm clamping torque. The robust 53 kW Starrag gear spindle provides 1,600 Nm at 4,500 rpm. The new HSK-B160 interface ensures high tool rigidity, enabling deep cavity machining with long tools while maintaining precision and stability.

Prepared for Future High-Performance Cutting

The S1250 HD is designed for upcoming manufacturing processes involving near-net shaped blanks, reducing roughing operations and shifting focus to high-performance finishing in complex cavities. Large HSK-B160 tool holders guarantee stability for tools up to 500 mm long, ensuring continued precision in titanium machining.

Industry Recognition and Airbus Orders

The Starrag S1250 HD concept has proven highly successful, confirmed by an order from Airbus for its Varel site, including five machines. This adoption underscores Starrag’s leadership in titanium machining and high-performance aerospace production.
