Leading collection and sorting solutions provider TOMRA solidifies its position in artificial intelligence with a 25% stake in PolyPerception, a pioneering start-up in AI-based waste flow monitoring.

Strategic Collaboration

TOMRA initiated collaboration with PolyPerception in December 2022, and this investment represents another step in TOMRA’s journey to transform resource recovery with the latest technology.

Dr. Volker Rehrmann, Head of TOMRA Recycling, emphasizes the synergy between TOMRA’s advanced material sorting systems and PolyPerception’s innovative material analysis. This collaboration aims to optimize the entire process and material flow, providing significant advantages to customers.

PolyPerception’s Waste Analysis Solutions

PolyPerception offers a waste analysis solution for PET recyclers and sorting plants. The technology allows continuous assessment of sorted streams, minimizing material loss and ensuring compliance with stringent regulations governing food-grade recycling.

Nicolas Braem, CEO of PolyPerception, expresses delight in strengthening the partnership with TOMRA, leveraging TOMRA’s market position for accelerated technology development and increased market visibility.

AI and Data at TOMRA’s Core

AI and data have long been integral to TOMRA’s R&D activities and product portfolio. In 2019, TOMRA introduced the industry’s first deep learning technology for waste sorting. The company continues to invest in deep learning, with applications like wood chip classification in 2022.

Rehrmann reaffirms TOMRA’s conviction that AI, combined with traditional sensors, will significantly boost material circularity. Internal development teams are working at high speed, with more announcements expected in the first half of 2024.
