Two biogas plant operators are pulling together: With a joint venture notarized yesterday, Leipzig-based BALANCE Erneuerbare Energien GmbH – a wholly owned subsidiary of VNG AG – and Lower Saxony-based biogas all-rounder EnviTec Biogas AG intend to jointly produce and market CO2-free fuel for commercial and heavy-duty transport as an independent supplier. The bio-LNG liquefaction plant (liquefied natural gas) planned in Brandenburg, near Berlin, by the just-named BALANCE EnviTec Bio-LNG GmbH is to have storage tanks and a filling station for collection by tanker truck, in addition to the actual liquefaction of biomethane.

“With our cooperation, we want to set an important milestone for decarbonization in the transport sector,” says Olaf von Lehmden, CEO of EnviTec Biogas AG. Thomas Fritsch, Managing Director of BALANCE adds, “We are pleased that we will be able to liquefy biomethane into bio-LNG in our own plant in the future and bring it to the market, because only with CO2-neutral fuel can commercial and heavy-duty transport make its contribution to achieving climate protection targets.” The joint venture’s plant will be developed using state-of-the-art technology for near energy-neutral operation and will produce around 100 metric tons of bio-LNG per day from Q4 2023. These volumes can be used to power an average of up to 1,800 LNG trucks per year in an environmentally friendly manner.

The joint construction and operation of the liquefaction plant will enable two of Germany’s leading biogas plant operators to produce bio-LNG from their biomethane and bring it to market. Bio-LNG is mainly used for medium and heavy trucks that have to travel longer distances. “We already have inquiries from service station chains, from the logistics industry, but also from other companies that want to convert their fleets to the largely low-emission bio-LNG,” says von Lehmden. This is because the RED II directive, which is now in force, obliges fuel distributors to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of their products by 25 percent by 2030.

In addition to using self-generated biomethane, the joint venture is now purchasing biomethane and additionally offering other biomethane producers the option of liquefying biomethane as a service. “This means that we can purchase the biomethane from plant operators or provide capacities of the liquefaction plant, so that the customer can also market the resulting products itself,” Fritsch further explains.
