New York, Connecticut, Minnesota and South Dakota – the list of US states where EnviTec Biogas is implementing biogas and biogas upgrading projects in the United States is getting longer. “We currently have 15 plants under construction,” explains Lars von Lehmden, Managing Director of EnviTec Anlagenbau GmbH & Co. KG, based in Lohne and Saerbeck, Germany. Four plants are about to be commissioned.

Once commissioned, the plants, which run 100 percent on dairy cattle manure, will provide biomethane via existing natural gas grids. “Where there is no direct connection to the natural gas grid, the gas will be transported to the feed-in point via trailer,” explains von Lehmden, who, as Managing Director of EnviTec Biogas USA Inc. also manages the plant construction in the States. The customers are SJI Renewable Energy Ventures LLC (SJI) together with the development partner REV LNG LLC (REV). REV acts as project developer for the combined biogas and EnviThan gas upgrading plants on behalf of its customer SJI.

A novelty in the realisation of EnviTec biogas plants in the USA is the company’s own on-site container production. “With our partner Collins Precast in Iroquois South Dakota, we manufacture the container elements in the USA, which are then installed on the plants by our trained employees,” says von Lehmden – already 20 of a total of 31 contractually agreed containers have been manufactured this year and last year alone. This makes the German medium-sized company one of the few all-round suppliers in the USA – from the planning, construction and commissioning of biogas and biogas upgrading plants to technical and biological service. The increasing demand for biogas plant technology and gas treatment “Made in Germany” has also caused the EnviTec team on site to grow. “With Rochester in New York, Watertown in South Dakota and the headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon, we have a total of two warehouses and three offices in the USA. These locations are strategically located to best serve our customers with a team of 20 employees in five states,” said Timothy Logan, General Manager EnviTec Biogas USA Inc.

Having entered the US market, EnviTec Biogas has successfully implemented four biogas plant projects to date. In 2014, EnviTec received the Biogas Industry Award from the American Biogas Council (ABC) for the sustainability features of the Lawnhurst Energy, LLC biogas plant in New York State. “Due to the introduction of the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) at the federal level, state incentives such as the California Low Carbon Fuel Standard combined with the Inflation Recovery Act of 2022, demand for biogas and biogas upgrading systems has skyrocketed,” explains market expert Logan. The company is therefore also represented as an elite sponsor at Biogas Americas, the largest trade fair for biogas and biogas upgrading in North America. This event is organised by the American Biogas Council and takes place in Chicago from 15 to 18 May.
