It is an alliance with a signal effect. The European Commission and leading companies from all over Europe are launching a sustainable biomethane industry partnership – BIP for short – together as of today. The aim is to implement the 35 billion cubic metre target for biomethane by 2030. “With this initiative, politics and industry are pulling together and for us it is a matter of course that we are on board,” says Jörg Fischer, CFO of EnviTec Biogas AG, which operates worldwide from Lohne and Saerbeck.

The project was announced in the REPower EU Plan and has now been launched. The initiative primarily aims to reduce Europe’s dependence on Russian natural gas in a cost-effective way, while also making a significant contribution to diversifying farmers’ incomes and ensuring a circular approach. “BIP is open to all interested stakeholders who wish to contribute to the realisation of this goal,” Fischer explains. All EU Member States are invited to join the Biomethane Industrial Partnership, as well as companies, industry associations, academia and civil society organisations, he said.

Today’s symbolic opening of a renewable gas pipeline marks the launch of the EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) in Brussels. It is the largest annual event dedicated to renewable energy and efficient energy use in Europe and includes a range of activities to build a secure energy future for Europe.

On the occasion of the launch of BIP, Harmen Dekker, Executive Director of the European Biogas Association, also underlined that the biomethane sector is ready to reach the target of 35 billion cubic metres, but this will require investments of 70 to 80 billion euros. BIP will therefore play an important role in Europe to drive joint efforts to overcome barriers to investment, production and use. The technical launch of the Biomethane Industry Partnership will take place on 25 October 2022.
