“The USA wants to become climate neutral by 2050 – and we are proud to be able to support this with our many years of expertise,” says Lars von Lehmden, Managing Director of EnviTec Anlagenbau GmbH & Co. KG, based in Lohne and Saerbeck, Germany. The biogas all-rounder is currently building four biogas projects in the United States, with six more biogas projects already in the pipeline for 2022.
The customers are SJI Renewable Energy Ventures LLC (SJI) together with development partner REV LNG LLC (REV). REV acts as project developer for the combined biogas and EnviThan gas upgrading plants on behalf of its customer SJI. A leading renewable energy and mobile energy services project development company, REV specialises in the development, production, supply, transportation and distribution of liquefied natural gas (LNG), compressed natural gas (CNG) and renewable natural gas (RNG). SJI, an energy infrastructure holding company based in Folsom, NJ, provides energy services to customers through two subsidiaries.

“We are very pleased to be working with EnviTec Biogas, a global player in the field of biogas plant construction and related biogas upgrading technology. The quality of their work and their high technical and safety standards have set standards in the industry,” said Donna Schempp, President of SJI Renewable Energy Ventures during her visit to EnviTec Biogas this week. Accompanied by their respective teams, Schempp and REV LNG CEO David Kailbourne learned about the status of ongoing projects and toured the EnviThan production hall at EnviTec headquarters, the Saerbeck Bioenergy Park and the EnviTec plant in Köckte, Saxony-Anhalt. “As a leader in the development of renewable energy projects, REV LNG is committed to implementing creative energy solutions that help our company and the customers we serve reduce their environmental footprint. Having a world-class original equipment manufacturer is critical to this goal, and with EnviTec this week we have taken a big step forward,” Kailbourne said during the visit.

“The fact that we have already built and commissioned four plants in the USA certainly helps us to once again set foot in the US biogas and gas upgrading market,” said von Lehmden, who as Managing Director of EnviTec Biogas USA Inc. also manages plant construction in the States. Back in 2014, EnviTec received the Biogas Industry Award from the American Biogas Council (ABC) for the sustainability features of its Lawnhurst Energy, LLC biogas plant in New York State.

“Unlike when we first entered the market, however, the four plants under construction will not produce heat and electricity,” explains von Lehmden. The plants in New York State and Connecticut, which are 100 per cent powered by dairy cattle manure, will provide their RNG (Renewable Natural Gas) via existing natural gas grids once they are completed at the end of 2022.

One of the drivers for the construction of the new plants is the Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) enacted by the California government. With the adoption of the LCFS, California aims to reduce the carbon intensity of transportation fuels compared to traditional petroleum fuels, gasoline and diesel. A financing package for energy derived from organic waste is also provided through the federal Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). As the RFS creates a market for biogas that is upgraded to vehicle fuel, this is an important tool to promote the growth of the biogas and biogas upgrading industry.
