Pepperl+Fuchs launches one of First Ethernet-APL Control Cabinet Solutions on Market

Pioneering Achievement in Hazardous Areas: Ethernet-APL-Based Enclosures With LB System Successfully in Operation

Pepperl+Fuchs’ reputation as a pioneer and market leader in electrical explosion protection is well deserved, as demonstrated by its latest groundbreaking solution: for a greenfield project, 100 individually configured control cabinets were engineered and manufactured in one of the six Solution Engineering Centers. These are equipped with Ethernet-APL switches and the LB system (Remote I/O)—and have been successfully commissioned.

High-Speed Data Transmission at IIot Level

This engineered solution demonstrates how modern diagnostic functions and digital signal transmission can be reliably implemented in demanding industrial environments. It also enables the simultaneous use of existing and modern field devices — without additional interfaces or system breaks: classic field signals are integrated via Remote I/O modules, while Ethernet-APL-capable devices communicate directly via the switch. Process and diagnostic data from Profibus PA devices are consolidated and translated by the switch into PROFINET using proxy technology.

The infrastructure solutions are connected to the control system via PROFINET. This creates a lean, clearly structured system architecture that reduces complexity and makes planning, operation, and maintenance significantly more effective and efficient.

Modular, Service-Friendly, Flexible

At the heart of the solution is a FieldConnex® Ethernet-APL switch with 24 ports, combined with an LB Remote I/O backplane with 22 slots. Both the vertically mounted Remote I/O system and the switch are fully pre-wired — a decisive advantage that speeds up commissioning and reduces installation effort.

Power is supplied via modules from the PS1000 series, installed on a separate DIN rail. Multifunction terminals provide additional flexibility in the field. They can be used for a variety of purposes, such as protecting valve circuits or actuating signal devices. Shield terminals ensure the metallic shielding of the Ethernet-APL switches and the LB system, enabling interference-free and safe operation.

With this IIoT-ready solution, Pepperl+Fuchs sets a milestone for the practical use of Ethernet-APL in process industries.
