Siemens Energy has been awarded the contract for the engineering, procurement and construction of the San Gabriel combined cycle power plant (CCPP) in Southeast Asia with a capacity of 414 megawatts (MW). The customer is First NatGas Power Corp., a 100% owned company of the Philippine independent power producer First Gen Corporation. Siemens will build San Gabriel as a turnkey facility and then operate it. The heart of the power plant is the Siemens SGT6-8000H gas turbine. Including this order, Siemens has sold 25 H-Class gas turbines worldwide. With an efficiency of more than 60 percent, San Gabriel will be the most efficient gas-fired power plant in South East Asia. Commissioning is scheduled for March 2016. The order, including a long-term maintenance contract, is valued at about €395 million.

After the Santa Rita and San Lorenzo CCPPs, the San Gabriel facility is now the third that Siemens has constructed and operated as a turnkey power plant in the Philippines. San Gabriel will be built in Batangas City located in the Calabarzon region, which is about 110 kilometers south of the Philippine capital of Manila. Siemens will be supplying a SGT6-8000H gas turbine, a SST6-5000 steam turbine, a hydrogen-cooled SGen6-2000H generator, a Benson type heat recovery steam generator, the electrical engineering, as well as the SPPA-T3000 control system. As the general contractor, Siemens’ Philippine subsidiary, Siemens, Inc., will also handle turnkey construction of the plant.

It is expected that the demand for electricity in the Philippines will almost double from 22 GW of installed capacity to 42 GW by 2030. Due to the high price of natural gas, there is considerable demand for high-efficiency power plants. “For these market requirements, our power plants featuring H-Class technology with high power density are the perfect answer,” said Rochus Bergmann, CEO of Siemens Energy Solutions Ltd., Korea.

“We are constructing much needed additional power generating capacity for the Luzon grid. The San Gabriel project will be using the latest Siemens technology that will make it the most efficient gas-fired plant in the country”, said Federico Lopez, Chairman and CEO of First Gen Corporation, the parent company of First NatGas Power Corp.

High-efficiency combined-cycle power plants and the associated service are part of Siemens’ Environmental Portfolio. Around 43 percent of its total revenue stems from green products and solutions. That makes Siemens one of the world’s leading providers of eco-friendly technology.
