In response to the worldwide growing wind energy market, the lightning and surge protection specialist DEHN + SÖHNE offers surge protective devices specifically designed for use in wind turbines such as the new DEHNguard® DG SE H 1000 VA FM to minimise the risk of failure resulting from surges. These surge protective devices do not only have to meet high electrical requirements, they may also be exposed to high mechanical loads. Therefore, they are rated for voltages up to 1000 V and discharge currents up to 40 kA (8/20μs) and the protection modules are vibration and shock-proof.

The new DEHNguard® DG SE H 1000 VA FM is specifically designed for protecting wind turbines against surges (e.g. for DFIGs – Double Fed Induction Generators). This powerful new arrester is rated for voltages up to 1000 V and discharge currents up to 40 kA (8/20μs). The integrated series connection of a varistor and a gas discharge tube ensures that the arrester does not operate in case of voltages up to 2,200 Vpeak. Nevertheless, an extremely low voltage protection level is achieved. The high discharge capacity and absence of leakage currents ensure a long service life of the surge protective device.

Its module locking system ensures that neither shock or vibration during transport and use nor the enormous forces of discharge can loosen the protection modules. Nevertheless, they can be easily replaced without tools by simply pressing the module release button of the protection modules.

The function of the arrester is monitored by a visual status indication and a remote signalling contact, thus meeting the increasing availability requirements of electrical systems. The DEHNguard® DG SE H 1000 VA FM surge protective device can be installed easily and space-efficiently (only 1.5 standard DIN modules per pole). This saves time, space and installation costs.
